The emergence and development of musical art during the Romantic era in the nineteenth century was closely connected with the establishment of social musical institutions, which enabled music to reach broader strata of bourgeois society. However, the rise of instrument making and the output of music publishing houses demonstrate that genuine musical life took place primarily in bourgeois homes, furnished with musical instruments and collections of sheet music. Alongside chamber music, the principal forms of domestic music-making were piano performance and song, presented in an intimate setting. This characteristic also applies to Pressburg (Prešporok), the former coronation city of the Hungarian kings, where the Church Music Society and the local opera house represented the principal musical institutions. In the nineteenth century, Pressburg was a city with a predominantly German-speaking population, a Hungarian administration, and a Slovak student body and proletariat. It functioned, in a sense, as a suburb of the Viennese metropolis, and this circumstance likewise determined the character of its domestic culture.
Vznik a život hudobného umenia v období romantizmu v 19. storočí bol spojený s budovaním spoločenských hudobných inštitúcií, ktoré hudbe zabezpečovali dotyk so širšími vrstvami meštianskej spoločnosti, no vzostup nástrojárstva a produkcie hudobných vydavateľstiev dosvedčujú, že skutočný hudobný život sa odohrával najmä v meštianskych domácnostiach, vybavených hudobnými nástrojmi a notovými archívmi. K hlavným druhom domáceho pestovania hudby patrila popri komornej hudbe najmä klavírna produkcia a pieseň, prednášaná v intímnom prostredí.
